Joy Division: The Documentary - Special Screening

Back by popular demand: The story of one of the most influential bands this city has ever produced:

In 1976 after attending a Sex Pistols concert, four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester founded Joy Division. Though the group achieved only modest success during their career, and released just two official albums, they have proven to be one of the most inventive and influential bands of their era. This engrossing documentary, directed by Grant Gee and written by music critic Jon Savage, explores the profound legacy of the band’s collective musical genius and singular vision, as well as their continued influence over thirty years.

Featuring interviews with the surviving band members (commonly known as New Order), the film examines the band’s story as depicted through never-before-seen live performance footage, personal photos, period films and newly discovered audio tapes. Joy Division: The Documentary chronicles a time of great social and political change, and how thegroup managed to transcend economic and cultural barriers to produce an enduring musical legacy.

Screening as part of Salford Museum and Art Gallery's celebration of Salford's musical history, "Quiffs, Riffs and Tiffs", this film screening will be preceded by an exclusive Private View of the Exhibition, from 5.00pm to 6.00pm.

Following the screening, there will be a special launch signing of ONE TOP CLASS MANAGER: THE NOTEBOOKS OF ROB GRETTON, a new book published by Manchester District Music Archive in collaboration with Anti-Archivists, and a chance to mingle.

This event is presented in association with Manchester District Music Archive; an online community archive designed to celebrate Greater Manchester music, protect its heritage and promote awareness of its cultural importance. The Archive currently contains 2335 bands, 478 venues and 2844 artefacts.
