LAST MINUTE PROGRAMME CHANGES AND ADDITIONS

A Film Festival is very much a work in progress, right up until the day it begins. Schedules shift and evolve; sometimes due to the unfortunate last-minute unavailability of a print, other times because new films are offered to us, new venues open their doors, exciting events suddenly become possible.

And so, for whatever reason, changes get made.

This page is intended to keep you aware of any last minute substitutions, additions, or changes to the existing programme.

CHANGES OF DAY / VENUE:

Please note that some of our “Special Guest” events have moved around a little, and are thus not as listed in the original printed Festival Catalogue. (This is what happens when you ask guests to make themselves feel at home!)

The FILMONIK event will now be taking place on MONDAY November 26th at Salford Arts Theatre at 8pm.

The COMMA PRESS event will now be taking place on TUESDAY November 27th at Islington Mill at 7pm.

The GIRLS ON FILM event will now be taking place on TUESDAY November 27th at Islington Mill at 8pm.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

IT’S A GIFT (Salford Cinema, Monday November 26th)

This film will not now be showing. Instead we present the classic screwball comedy with a social conscience, BORN YESTERDAY (1950), starring an Oscar-winning Judy Holiday as a dim-bulb gangster’s moll who discovers her sense of civic responsibility.

HORSEFEATHERS (Salford Cinema, Tuesday November 27th)

This film will not now be showing. Instead, we will be showing A NIGHT AT THE OPERA. We hope that Marx Brothers devotees will not be too disappointed with the substitution. This is after all a longer film, so you’ll be getting more Marx madness for your money. What’s more, Zeppo’s not in this one to slow things down.

CHANGES TO PROGRAMME

SALFORD ARTS THEATRE Tuesday November 27th

Due to the last minute addition of Joy Division: The Documentary (8.30pm, VUE CINEMA) to the festival programme, we have decided to switch the screenings of CHRISTINE PIPER and 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE, to allow audiences who wish to have a double bill of Salford Is Sound to do so.

Thus 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE will now be screening at 2.30pm, and the Premiere of CHRISTINE PIPER will be at 8pm.

PLEASE NOTE: MANCHESTER UNITED ARE PLAYING AT HOME ON THE EVENING OF NOVEMBER 27TH. KICK-OFF IS 7.45pm. THIS WILL RESULT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND CROWDED PUBLIC TRANSPORT FROM ABOUT 6.00pm UNTIL ABOUT 7.30pm. PLEASE BEAR THIS IN MIND WHEN PLANNING YOUR EVENING.

ADDITIONS TO PROGRAMME

THE PIE FACTORY, Monday November 26th 7.15pm

THE TALLY

(Dir: Terry Egan and Claire Stride, 2007, 50 min, Cert U)

AT THE TIME OF GOING TO PRESS WITH THE FESTIVAL CATALOGUE, THE DETAILS OF THIS SCREENING WERE STILL BEING FINALISED. SALFORD FILM FESTIVAL IS PROUD TO BE ABLE TO PRESENT THE WORLD PREMIERE OF THE LATEST FILM FROM REELmcr.

A group of unlikely kids embark on a Scooby Doo-type adventure as they travel to their annual Morris Dancing competition.  Their mini-bus breaks down and they are stranded at a derelict minehead.  Unaware of the history beneath their feet, they drink and smoke to kill the boredom.  A careless cigarette changes their lives as they are blasted back in time to the day of a terrible pit disaster.  Their adventures open their eyes to the legacy of their mining heritage.

A REELmcr project, commissioned by CRIS and funded by the Coalfield Regeneration Trust with the purpose of engaging the former mining community of Higher Folds, the film was developed over 12 weeks from a series of drama workshops, utilizing characters and storylines devised by the people of the community, working with a professional screenwriter. Consultants included ex-miners who live on Higher Folds and the local Morris Dancing Troop, who also feature in the film. Acting coaches included Steve Hillman (Shameless), Danielle Henry (Emmerdale), and Tom Charnock (The Wind That Shakes The Barley), and there is a cameo from Emmerdale actor Cleveland Campbell.

VUE CINEMA, Tuesday November 27th:

JOY DIVISION, THE DOCUMENTARY.

Dir: Grant Gee, 2007, 93 min, Cert tbc

SALFORD FILM FESTIVAL, IN ASSOCIATION WITH MANCHESTER DISTRICT MUSIC ARCHIVE PRESENTS A SPECIAL PREVIEW SCREENING WITH INTRODUCTION AND Q&A BY PETER HOOK

The story of one of the most influential bands the city has ever produced.

In 1976 after attending a Sex Pistols concert, four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester founded Joy Division. Though the group achieved only modest success during their career, and released just two official albums, they have proven to be one of the most inventive and influential bands of their era. This engrossing documentary, directed by Grant Gee and written by music critic Jon Savage, explores the profound legacy of the band’s collective musical genius and singular vision, as well as their continued influence over thirty years.

Featuring interviews with the surviving band members (commonly known as New Order), the film examines the band’s story as depicted through never-before-seen live performance footage, personal photos, period films and newly discovered audio tapes. Joy Division: The Documentary chronicles a time of great social and political change, and how the group managed to transcend economic and cultural barriers to produce an enduring musical legal.

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE AN ADMISSION CHARGE OF £6.25 FOR THIS EVENT.
