THE BEAT IS THE LAW, PART 1

Follow Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley and other Sheffield natives on an epic northern musical adventure through Thatcher’s heartless 80s to the ecstasy and cocaine fuelled 90s. Discover the unique, gritty industrial sound of Sheffield’s post-punk musical underground, with its fusion of wryly ironic pop, stratchy funk, and intricately layered electronic noise. This is the story of a city on its uppers and those who wished to put it back on the map. And those who would go on to find themselves at the epicentre of Dance Culture and Britpop.

Eve Wood's earlier film MADE IN SHEFFIELD is screening on Sunday 22nd November as part of a programme curated by STUART MACONIE.

THIS ENGLAND: WIGAN CASINO

1977: As Punk Rock rages across the land, and the tabloids are screaming to "BAN THIS FILTH", over in Wigan, people are dancing all night to a different beat...

Tony Palmer's seminal study of the legendary Wigan Casino, the throbbing heart of the Northern Soul Scene captures the sounds and styles, the attitudes and the moves of an underground Musical phenomenon, which drew people from all over the country to a small post-industrial town on the Greater Manchester / Lancashire border, to celebrate the music they love with all their heart. And soul.

Featuring interviews with local characters, unique footage from the heaving dancefloor, and - of course! - a wonderful soundtrack, this classic documentary, originally part of Granada TV's "This England" series offers a snapshot of a time and a place, as well as a rallying cry for soul boys and girls everywhere to Get Down!

This film is screening with MADE IN SHEFFIELD as part of a programme SELECTED BY STUART MACONIE.
