Steve Balshaw interview

13 October 2009

Dan Stribling, Life reporter, interviews Steve Balshaw, Salford Film Festival's Programme Manager.

As programmer for the festival, what does your role entail?
My primary role is to select, source and secure the films, and to build these into a programme of screenings and related events that will hopefully attract an audience - so I deal with filmmakers and producers, and often with the various screening venues, ensuring that everything is coming together.

How did you get to become a festival programmer?
I've always been an obsessive film buff, and I got involved with Kinofilm, Manchester International Film Festival, initially as a volunteer, and later as an associate programmer, working my way up to programme co-ordinator and then manager.

Why do you think Salford needs a film festival?
Personally, I think every city needs a film festival, but Salford has more claim to need one than most. We have a long tradition of producing great film talent in Salford, actors, directors, and writers - in fact some of the first film ever shot in this country was on the streets of Salford - by Mitchell and Kenyon in about 1900. Also, of course, with the advent of Mediacity:UK Salford is positioned to be a global hub for filmmaking and associated creative activity.

Do you have any advice for young film makers out there, who may have made a film and now what to get it shown at a festival? What can they do to catch your eye?
I am always looking for something I haven't seen before: a new idea, a new approach, signs of a new talent developing. I like filmmakers who take risks, who have good stories to tell, and know how to back them up with strong images.

As it is the festival’s sixth year, can you give us your recommendations for ‘6 of the best’ films to look out for?
I can't do that, I'm too close to it. That's like asking me which of my children I'm fondest of! It's all great; you should come to all of it.

STARRING…THE PEOPLE OF SALFORD

Born in 2003 the Salford Film Festival paid special attention to the huge variety that Salford communities are famous for, and in encouraging their involvement in film-making both on screen and behind the camera, paved the way for five more seriously succ

He was Salford's Welles and King of Manchester Exploitation movies. He was a pioneer of independent filmmaking in the region. And now there's a book. You should own it.

In our past is our future. Understand one, and you can better visualise the other. This selection of films from the North West Film Archive offers a glimpse of the world that was, here in Salford - some of it now lost forever, some of it simply altered be
